Acid reflux in babies, also known as the Colic, is not at all an uncommon occurrence. That burning feeling caused by acid and other juices that digest food leaking up from the stomach into the esophagus can be a very painful feeling for an adult. Imagine how it feels to a baby who cannot tell you what this feels like.
Treatments
There are different methods used to control acid reflux in babies. It is possible to find special pillows for babies that allow you to keep the head propped. Yes, controlling acid reflux in babies can be a challenge, but the long-term results are what’s strived for. The acid reflux can be a condition that exists on its own or can be a result of other conditions within the child’s development. Dietary changes can control the acid reflux in babies. Dairy products tend to be one of the items that can cause acid reflux in babies.
It is recommended that gentle chiropractic care can control acid reflux in babies for a drug-free approach. The reason for chiropractic care is because the Vegas nerve, which controls the esophagal sphincter, runs close to the cervical vertebrae. Another method is liquid calcium. The cool and creamy texture of the liquid calcium allows your child to heal naturally, but as the child gets older the child will have to take heavier doses often.
Zantac and Reglin are common drugs used to treat acid reflux in babies and in adults. These medications have been given to babies as young as six weeks old, but some do prefer the more natural methods mentioned in the above paragraphs rather than giving medications inside of the baby’s bottle or some other method.
A major concern regarding acid reflux in babies is the fact that the baby will begin spitting up for prolonged periods of time and this could result in Apnea. Apnea is where the child will cease breathing for a period of time. This is a very scary and very dangerous situation and emphasizes the importance of seeking some sort of treatment for the baby’s acid reflux.
Some doctors believe that the increase in acid reflux in babies is due to the fact that parents have been told that it’s safer for newborns to sleep on their backs rather than on their stomachs. The fear of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is what has lead doctors to recommend this. Basically, it is the same concept with a baby as it is an adult. When an adult sleeps on his/her stomach, the acid reflux tends to be more severe. Either way, there are different causes and different treatments. Talk to your doctor to determine what is best for your baby and how to prevent and/or cure acid reflux in babies.
